Edited between 2008 and 2010 The Tradition Journal was a publication entirely dedicated to Traditional Western Predictive Astrology. At the time there were no journals or publications specialised solely on Traditional Astrology, and The Tradition came to fill this gap. Later came the experimental project of The Tradition Library which published sources that were unavailable at the time.

Now, a decade after the last issue, The Tradition and its sister project, The Tradition Library are again available to students. Once more, as a decade ago, we seek to encourage the research and study of the Art, serving as a point of reference for those interested in the Tradition

Venus goes home transits Cancer August 7 -September 6

Venus 1024px-Birth_of_VenusSandro Botticelli [Public domain]Venus in Cancer,water-born, Botticelli Sandro Botticelli [Public domain]Since most everyone in the world has been forced to be home during Covid-19 Venus in Cancer is more of the same but in a really loving and enjoying home, family, finding emotional safety and security and nurturing oneself.

Love needs emotional security now like never before. Being in isolation helps us to appreciate what we used to take for granted not that many months ago. Being separated from family, especially mothers has been very hard.  Everyone has been on Zoom connecting but Cancer is sentimental and there must be tears of sadness, loss and regret.

And the Goddess of love enters a traditional Mothering nurturing, nourishing caring for others, foodie time, eat comfort food, be with family and your mom and help others who are still struggling. I know we’ve all been…

Isis Rising 2020

One of my favorite tarot images: Isis as The Star in the Ancient Egyptian Tarot by Clive Barrett

It is getting to be that time. That time when She rises early, early in the dawning light. This is known as the “heliacal rising of Sirius” and it’s the best thing that happens in August as far as I’m concerned. While everything else starts to crisp in the late summer heat, I am refreshed in Her rising power.

Now some of you may be saying, “wait, wait, I thought that happens in July.” It could. When you are able to see Her heliacal (“before the sun”) rising depends on where on this globe you are.

Here in Portland, Oregon in 2020, Sirius rises at 4:34 in the morning of August 22rd. Further south, She rises earlier. It all depends on your latitude, you see. You can calculate Her rising in your…

Ahwere & the Magic Book

An Egyptian magical book
An Egyptian magical book

I was researching something else and was reminded of this Egyptian story. It’s a classic type of ancient tale. Yes, magic is involved. Isis and Thoth are involved. And dead people are involved.

It is usually called Setne and the Magic Book. It’s the one where the son of Rameses the Great, Setne Kaemweset, learns of a previous prince, Naneferkaptah, who aspired to magical knowledge and had discovered a magic book locked inside a series of chests and sunk in the bottom of the river. And now the son of Rameses, also a glutton for magical knowledge, wants it for himself.

I’d seen reference to that story again and again over the years, but I’d never read the whole thing. Turns out the tale is much more interesting than I’d thought. For one thing, the main story-within-a-story is being told by a woman, Ahwere, the daughter…

Tetragrammaton Meditation (30 mins.)

YHVH: the formula Tetragrammaton refers to the four-letter Hebrew name of God, Yeshua, or Yod, He, Vau, He (יהוה). These letters have been attributed to numerous four-part symbols, including the classic elements, cardinal directions, Tarot suits, and so on. The formula is often represented by the Father (Yod) joining with the Mother (He), to produce the Son (Vau) and the Daughter (He-final). Within Yoga it is possible to see this formula as describing the union of the subject and the object to produce the exalted state of mind and the resulting ecstasy.

Within a ceremonial magic framework, the first letter can also be interpreted as the original creative force, or Hadit, who “marries” the eternally fertile, co-equal female force, Nuit, resulting in the twins, Ra-Hoor-Khuit and Hoor-Par-Kraat (both of whom make up the deity Heru-ra-ha, perhaps meaning “Horus and Ra be Praised!”). There are many other uses of this formula within the realm of mysticism.

The Summer Cross-Quarter (Summer Thermstice) Approaches!

NaturalisticPaganism's avatarNaturalistic Paganism

Warm weather makes for pleasant stargazing, and the universe this year has already given us Comet Neowise (which is still barely visible but now has dropped to dimmer than 4th magnitude).  Also, this year will give us the best Perseid show for the past few years coming right up on August 12th (more on that soon)!  In the Northern Hemisphere, the Autumn cross-quarter or Summer Thermstice is celebrated on August 1 as Lughnasadh/Lammas/Lunasa. How will you be celebrating it?  Astronomically, the event occurs on August 6th for those in the United States, but at that moment it will already be August 7th UTC.
