Are You An Empath, Or Just Highly Sensitive?
Empath: A person who is capable of feeling the emotions or physical symptoms of others even if they themselves are not going through the same situation or events.
Highly Sensitive: Used to describe a person who has high sensory awareness and often feels extremely emotional or in-tune with their surroundings.
It is estimated that around 15-20 percent of the population is highly sensitive and another 2-3 percent of the population are empaths.
The term “empath” has been growing in popularity however, many are confused about what it actually means and mistaken it to describe someone who is highly sensitive.
Being an empath is really like having clairsentient abilities whereas being a highly sensitive individual is more about enhanced sensory awareness.
To put it simply- empaths pick on up energy whereas highly sensitive people pick up on sensory stimuli.
The difference is important because those who are highly sensitive can learn to protect their energy using various mindfulness tools however, empaths really need to learn how to harness their talents and channel them into something deeper.
So, what are the traits of an Empath?
- People feel comfortable telling you their personal stories and often comment how good they feel after talking to you, but you usually feel worse after talking to them.
- You experience aches and pains that are also being experienced by your loved ones or the people around you.
- When you are around others, you can pick up on certain energies and emotions, however when you are on your own, you feel a sense of calm and normality.
- You have trouble concentrating when others are around, or you feel overwhelmed easily when hanging around others, especially in crowded places.
- Some people appear to be intimidated by you as they can feel that you can see right through them.
- You understand or comprehend a lot of what others are going through and seem to know more than you were verbally told.
- You can instantly detect and absorb the emotions of others and feel them on a physical level.
- When you are around certain people you find yourself acting out of character or doing things you wouldn’t normally do.
- You have a hard time navigating through your own feelings and emotions and working out why you feel a certain way.
- You feel a certain way but have no idea why, only to find out that someone close to you is going through the same emotions.
- In Astrology, empaths usually have their Moon in a water sign or another sensitive placement.
Compare this to the traits of a Highly Sensitive Person:
- You feel your emotions or the emotions of others on a deeper level.
- You have the tendency to be more reactive than normal in emotional situations. Many might accuse you of being overly dramatic or that you need to calm down.
- You tend to take things very personally and are easily offended or disgruntled by other people’s thoughts and actions.
- You prefer to do things on your own and avoid hanging out in groups.
- You have a harder time making decisions because you are more aware of the possible outcomes.
- You have the ability to notice the finer details in your surroundings are are often sensitive to noise, colors and other stimuli.
- You have a hard time watching scary or violent movies and are easily moved by emotional scenes.
- You have tendency to cry more often and can sometimes be triggered to cry when others are crying.
- You are often more polite and conscientious than normal due to the fact that you are more aware of your surroundings.
- Often there is a propensity to developing anxiety, especially in social situations.
- In Astrology, a highly sensitive person usually has many planets in water signs.
Whether you resonate with being an empath or a highly sensitive person (or a bit of both), there are ways you can calm your feelings such as learning somemindfulness tools, practicing meditation and setting firm boundaries with others.
As an empath however, you may find these practices a little more challenging. Instead, you may benefit from working on an energetic level rather than an emotional or psychological one.
Try cleansing your etheric body often using sage, carrying around a protective crystal, or perhaps even seek out different forms of energy healing. You can also channel your abilities into psychic awareness or development.
Being an empath or highly sensitive person is definitely something that you can use to your advantage and the more you begin to master your abilities, the easier they will be to manage.
At the end of the day, we are all effected by the emotions, thoughts and feelings of others whether we realize it or not. Our energy is not limited to the containers of our physical body and the more we tap into this idea and grow in awareness, the more we can use it towards realizing our potential.
Daily Chabad
High upon her precipice, the soul is nameless, for she has no form—she will be whatever she must be.
Peering below, beneath the clouds, she perceives a faint shimmering of her light in the deep, wet earth. There she finds form, and she calls it a name, and she is called when that name is called, for she says, “This is me.”
But it is not her. It is only a faint glimmering of her light within the frame of a distant world.
Tarot Meditation: The High Priestess
High Priestess Meditation
You have chosen The High Priestess, the second major arcana card of the Tarot. This guided visualization will help to deepen your trust in your own intuitiveness and insightfulness.
In his journey The Fool meets The High Priestess whom he looks upon as his spiritual mother. She is receptive to anyone who seeks her counsel and guidance, for knowledge is revealed to those who seek it out.
The High Priestess is symbolized as the archetype of intuition, the unconscious, the healer, and feminine power. She represents all that is unknown, and yet can be accessed through stillness, and silence.
The High Priestess guided visualization begins with the creation of your own Peaceful Sanctuary. This is a place you can always come to, to find peace and calm in your life. In your Peaceful Sanctuary you will meet with The High Priestess.
The Fool is a soft breeze blowing everywhere in space. The Magician is a mighty whirlwind reaching from earth to sky. The High Priestess is the quiet within the wind, the peaceful eye within the storm. She dwells in a place where the air stirs not and even thoughts are quiet. This vestal is a child becoming almost a woman. Her days of protection and trust are with her yet. With her also is the first bloom of the mysteries of the Moon, the mysteries of later spring turning to summer in her body.
Look at the picture on the High Priestess card. See the priestess. Let your eyes meet hers. Her eyes flicker and then still. They look deeply into yours. In your heart a question grows. It slowly rises to clarity. The Priestess waits to answer it.
Close your eyes to the outside world. Let the blue and white of the little goddess shimmer before your mind. From your heart a need has reached out. From the temple of the Priestess a soft answer comes. The answer is not in words, for the need surpasses words. Let the soft blue and white of the goddess dissolve in silver moonlight. In the radiance find meaning.
In your preferred meditation posture, allow your eyes to close gently. Place your hands in your lap in line with your abdomen at the level of your navel. Hold your hands together, with the back of the right hand resting against the palm of the left hand, with your thumb tips gently touching. Have the hint of a smile on your face. Just by sitting in a meditation posture, you have already set an intention. There is dignity and grace in your posture, and you may be aware of your back straightening. You may be aware of your shoulders sloping gently downwards, releasing and letting go any tension in your neck. Your feet, flat on the floor if you are sitting on the floor, or your knees touching the floor, if you’re sitting on a cushion.
Now, take a slow deep breath, bringing the breath all the way down into your belly. And as you slowly breathe out, breathe out until your lungs are empty of air. And, when you have done this, continue to breathe naturally … being aware of the breath: the inflowing breath and the outflowing breath. Breathing freely and easily, being aware of the breath as it flows through your nostrils.
Allow your awareness to flow through your body and if there are any holdings or tension in any part of your body, take your breath to that place now. Breathe in and out of that place in your body where there may be tension or holding. Focusing in that place, breathing in and out of that place, allowing the tension, the holding or the blockage to be released in your body. Just being aware of the breath, allowing your body to soften with each breath … the inward breath and the outward breath … allowing the body to be soft … soft body, gentle breath.
Moving with the breath now into the mysteriousness that brings you in touch with the High Priestess.
And remaining with your eyes gently closed, visualize yourself now following a path. Look down at the path as you imagine yourself walking along it … what sort of path is it? This is the path that is leading you to your peaceful sanctuary. Enter now into your peaceful sanctuary … it could be a warm cozy room … it could be some special place in nature that you love, like the beach, the forest, a lake or some other place. This is the place that you can always come to where you can relax where you can experience peace and calm, a place where you are always safe and protected. A place that you love to be in.
Being in your own special haven, look about you and acquaint yourself with your surroundings. What do you see here? Touch the things that you feel drawn to here and that you love. Smell the scents and aromas that are uplifting to your senses in this special place. And, listen to the sounds that are unique to your wonderous peaceful sanctuary.
See before you a special seat that you can sink into and feel cozy and relaxed. This can be any kind of seat in which you can sit in comfort and safety. Go now to your special seat and make yourself comfortable there.
Counting backwards now into an even deeper state of relaxation … knowing that you are in control at all times … hearing these words and letting them drift by …
TEN … going deeper … NINE, EIGHT … deeper and deeper … SEVEN, SIX … relaxing and deepening … FIVE, FOUR … very very deep … THREE, TWO … relaxing, deepening … relaxing, deepening … and ONE … feeling so relaxed, so very very relaxed in your peaceful sanctuary.
Now as you wish, invite the High Priestess to enter your sacred space. Visualize in your mind … turning your head to the right and seeing this feminine vision enter your abode. She may appear in the form of a figure familiar to you, or a light being, or someone else that is right for you. As she comes closer and closer to you … see her deep beauty … her gentle smile … her lovingness towards you … and greet this archetype of feminine power that is wise, intuitive, mysterious and understanding.
Feel her sensitivity to you and how much she loves you.
The High Priestess represents secret knowledge, hidden feelings, intuition and mysterious influences.
Watch as she seats herself before you, her garments flowing about her. She may be dressed in the flowing blue robes as depicted in the tarot … adorning her head is an Egyptian style headdress symbolizing the waxing moon and the waning moon … on her lap is a scroll or book of ancient wisdom … and at her feet, the lunar crescent.
The High Priestess conveys to you that she is associated with the Moon, which symbolizes the hidden and mysterious lunar cycles and psychic revelations.
Perhaps the High Priestess seated before you may have appeared in a different form. See what that is now for you.
The High Priestess waits with eternal patience before you, so just allow yourself to merge with the depth of her awareness, with the depth of her presence. See how she gazes at you with encouragement … how she accepts you unconditionally.
When someone accepts you unconditionally, can you feel that growing confidence within you? For in her presence, you are able to tap into your own source of compassionate power, intuition and wisdom. The High Priestess is conveying to you that you, too, are a compassionate, powerful, intuitive and wise being.
So, taking in a deep breath … breathe in the Knowing and Understanding that you are indeed compassionate, powerful, intuitive and wise. And, as you breathe out, soften and deepen … and embrace these qualities more and more … and continue to breathe naturally.
Looking into the face of the High Priestess, see there the ancient understanding of knowing life’s dualities … of knowing good and evil, light and dark, summer and winter … knowing all of these things … understanding all of them … accepting all of them as they are. Feeling again and again that depth of understanding that is conveyed to you by the High Priestess for she is aware of the ups and downs of life … she is aware of all the viscissitudes of life … remaining calm and peaceful as they come and go.
If there is something or someone in your life that you need more clarity around … perhaps a problem you may be facing, or a decision that you are in the process of making … ask the High Priestess now for her help. Speak to her as though she is a very close friend … listening to her inner guidance. It may appear to you as a symbol, a word or a thought.
Perhaps some aspect of your life may be out of balance … it could be your health, a relationship, your finances, or something else. Ask the High Priestess now what you need to do to bring greater balance and harmony back into your life … listen for the answers within your heart, letting go of logic, and trusting the intuitive response to your questions.
Sitting in the presence of the High Priestess, you can trust her counsel to seek new paths and hidden paths to Wisdom … your intuitive insights will suggest new solutions to the issues you may have in your life at this time, so trust your intuition.
There may be something else that you may need counsel about … and, if so, take this time now to communicate more deeply with her. The answers may come to you in the forms of a symbol, a word, or something else … and if not at this time, that is okay. Revelations may come to you as you go about your daily life.
The High Priestess symbolizes inner unity. Perhaps at some point in your life you may have felt separate from others … you may not have always been able to express your feelings because you may have been afraid of rejection … You may not have always been able to say what was right for you because you were afraid that speaking your truth might upset another … you may have cut off parts of yourself so that you could fit in and be acceptable … you may have secrets in your heart that reveal to you what you really want and where you are going.
Now, draw in a long, slow, deep breath … breathing in the essence of the High Priestess: calmness, sensitivity, stability, silence, deep understanding. And, as you slowly breathe out, let go of all the struggles in you that displace love … and continue to breathe naturally.
It is not by accident that you have chosen the High Priestess at this time, for she is inviting you to go inward in your meditations … to uncover your truth through inner sensations, images and flashes of insightful knowing.
Immerse yourself in the mysteriousness of the High Priestess, sometimes called the Daughter of the Stars … and sense or feel or see her being reflected back at you as she sits before you, and make an intention to yourself to release old patterns of conditioning that no longer serve you … simply by starting with, “I intend to release old patterns of conditioning that no longer serve me,” is a way of bringing that intention very clearly and fervently into your life.
By doing this each day, you can live with an open and loving heart.
Now, take in another long, slow deep breath, breathing the breath all the way into your belly, all the way into your body … breathing in soft healing blue light and filling your whole body with soft healing blue light … and as you breathe out, letting go of the patterns that no longer serve you … and continue to breathe freely and easily.
The High Priestess rises gracefully before you and bids you farewell. You may wish to express your thanks and gratitude to her. As she leaves, hear her assuring you that she is always there if you have a yearning to be in her presence.
It is now time for you to leave your peaceful sanctuary … and so you stand and visualize yourself now exiting from your safe place and being back on the path once more. You know that you can come here any time you wish.
And counting from one to five …
ONE … becoming aware of yourself sitting on the chair or aware of yourself sitting on the cushion on the floor …
TWO … gently wiggling your fingers …
THREE … slowly moving your head from side to side …
FOUR … being aware of your feet and toes, and wiggling your toes and moving your feet.
And FIVE, very very slowly opening your eyes.
Now, take a deep and clearing breath, and stretch your whole body if that feels good for you.

Tarot Meditation: The Magician
You have chosen The Magician, the first card in the major arcana of the Tarot. This visualization guides you in deepening your connection to your creativity, and your ability to manifest in this world.
The first person that The Fool encounters on his journey is the Magician. The Magician is the archetype of manifesting in the material world. The Magician has the power to initiate The Fool. Through undergoing this initiation The Fool awakens to his creativity. His creativity flourishes, and with skill and determination he is led to new opportunities that help him to flourish and prosper.
Absorb the image of The Magician before you begin this visualization.
Before becoming the Magician, the Fool is a breeze blowing in light gusts everywhere in space. When the Fool becomes the Magician, the breeze becomes a whirlwind of concentrated force. When glazed, absent-minded eyes become suddenly bright and hawk-like, the Magician wakens.
Look at the picture on the Magician card. Imagine yourself as the magician. Your right hand rises to receive a ray of warm and brilliant light. The light travels through you, influenced by your mind. Power issues from your left hand and the world is molded in the image of your thoughts.
Imagine yourself alone in a vast place. You cannot see the walls or the ceiling. Air stirs about you in soft, random touches. Inside your body, near the navel, a great force dwells. Your mind is clear, with a golden light about your head. The light reaches down and sends out a wave of force, like a great curved and shapeless arm from the center near your navel. The arm of force catches the air about you. Winds begin to blow about you in circular motion. Feel the whirling vortex of power strong about you. Below you a light dimly shines. It brightens. Beneath you in the light is a great hall lined with many doors. The doors open and close at your bidding. One door attracts your attention more than the others. Let the door open. See what is beyond it.
Seated in your preferred meditation posture, allow your eyes to close gently. And place your hands in your lap in line with your lower abdomen. Hold your hands together, with the back of your right hand resting in the plam of your left hand, with your thumbs gently touching. Have just the hint of a smile on your face.
Now, draw in a long deep breath through your nose, breathing a breath all the way into your belly. And, as you breath out of your mouth, allow yourself to really sigh … AAAHHH. Continue to breathe in your own way.
Breathing to your own rhythm, remaining with your eyes gently closed … visualize yourself walking along a path. Look down and see the path as you imagine yourself walking along it. What sort of path is it? Feel the texture of what is under your feet on this path … it could be a smooth or rough path, or the sort of path you have always loved that is leading you to your special place of beauty, harmony and peace.
Walking along this path, see before you now your peaceful sanctuary. It could be in a warm cozy room … it could be some special place in nature that you love, like the beach, the forest, a lake or some other place. This is a place that you can always come to, where you can relax and experience peace and calm. A place where you are always safe and protected.
Enter now into your own special haven and look about you to acquaint yourself with your surroundings. Touch the things that await you here and that you love. Smell the special scents and aromas wafting through the air. Listen to the sounds that are unique to your wondrous place.
See before you now a special seat that you can sink into and feel cozy and relaxed. This can be any kind of seat in which you can sit in comfort and safety. Go now to your special seat and make yourself comfortable there.
Counting backwards to an even deeper state of relaxation, knowing that you are in control at all times … hearing these words and letting them drift by …
TEN … going deeper … NINE, EIGHT … deeper and deeper … SEVEN, SIX … relaxing and deepening … FIVE, FOUR … very very deep … THREE, TWO … relaxing, deepening … relaxing, deepening … and ONE … feeling so relaxed, so very very relaxed in your peaceful sanctuary.
Continue to breathe naturally, just being aware of the breath … the inward breath and the outward breath … allow yourself to hear these words and allow them to fade away.
Inside your peaceful sanctuary, visualize yourself now as The Magician. See yourself surrounded by beautiful flowers … red roses and white lilies. Imagine yourself bending forward and inhaling the delicious fragrant perfume of the roses. Smell the fragrance as it moves through the air and fills the air with wondrous delight.
Look down at your clothes, at the clothes of The Magician … you could be wearing a white robe, a red cloak and a blue belt around your waist symbolizing a snake that represents your creative powers. You could be dressed in some other way that is right for you as The Magician. Hold an image of how you would be dressed.
Imagine now running your hands over the textures of the fabrics you are wearing. What do these textures feel under your hands and fingers?
Now, imagine a table and on it, a Golden cup … a wand … a Pantacle that has the five-pointed star embossed on a round disc … and a sword that symbolizes power, strength and courage. Within these four objects, there is a totality of the Four Elements: Water, Fire, Earth and Air.
Now, visualize yourself moving to the table, picking up the Golden cup and drinking the pure liquid from the cup. Visualize the sweet taste of this golden nectar filling your whole being with magical powers that unfold your creativity and abilities to manifest in the world.
Now, placing the cup back on the table, feel in your right hand feel a wand raised toward Heaven, while your left hand is pointing to the Earth. As the archetype of the Magician, feel the strength and power that flows through your whole being as you connect with Heaven and Earth. Visualize yourself as the master of your life and destiny.
Now, take in a long slow deep breath through your nose as you absorb the Magician’s qualities. And, as you slowly breathe out through your nose, deepen into the Silence and stillness within you that is the way of the Magician. Continue to breathe naturally, being aware once again of the inward breath and the outward breath merging you into deeper silence and stillness.
Imagine now above your head the sign of eternity, the figure 8, that symbolizes that you are of Spirit and also able to bring about things in the world. Being at one with the Magician, now is the time to incorporate the lesson of “as above, so below”, the lesson being that mastery in one aspect of life brings about mastery in another.
Feeling the qualities of the Magician enveloping you and within you, visualize now being surrounded by bright golden light representing solar consciousness that allows you to explore the world and to master it.
What in your life do you want to master, right now?
What do you need to bring forward to master your goal, aspiration or ambition?
Within your own inner silence and stillness, answers may come to you intuitively and spontaneously. If not immediately, that is okay for you will discover these answers as you go about your daily life by your intention to manifest for your highest good what you most desire.
The Magician is the archetypal achiever. As you reflect on what you want to achieve, use your ability to be flexible, to communicate your ideas, for you have the skills. But also, listen to your inner voice. When the Magician appears within you, it symbolizes your creativity, action, initiative and self-assertiveness. You can create new opportunities that give you courage, driving power, skill and determination to enable these to flourish and blossom.
With the powers of the Magician, how would you like your creativity and originality to expand?
Imbued in the archetype of the Magician there is great power.
Now, take in a deep breath, breathing power and strength into your body. And as you breathe out, breathe your empowerment through every cell in your body. And, when you’ve done this, continue to breathe naturally once again.
Power can always be used for good or bad. Misuse of power abounds on our planet. Whether you are male or female, you carry with you certain aspects of power.
What does power mean to you?
How does it appear in your life?
How wisely do you use your power?
With the power of the Magician within you, you are urged to bring all aspects of your life together. These include love, emotions, money and morality. If one or some of these are out of balance, just allow these aspects of your life to be acknowledged, and to intend that your deeper inner knowing can bring about the changes that will help you manifest your great potential.
Embracing the archetype of the Magician, you are open to opportunities or the importance of a new enterprise … and you will have the willpower, the initiative and the skills to succeed in whatever you do.
Now, take in a long slow deep breath … and as you do, embrace the qualities of the Magician in yourself. And breathing out … know that in drawing this tarot card, you have the ability to manifest your creativity and potential.
Continue to breathe naturally.
And now, visualize the clothing of the Magician fading away.
Leaving your sanctuary, step now back onto the path … knowing that you can return to this safe and peaceful place any time you wish.
And counting from one to five …
ONE … becoming aware of yourself sitting on the chair or on your cushion …
TWO … gently wiggling your fingers …
THREE … slowly moving your head from side to side …
FOUR … being aware of your feet on the floor, or your knees on the floor sitting on the cushion …
And FIVE, very very slowly, wiggling your toes and moving your feet.
Take a deep and clearing breath and slowly open your eyes, stretching your whole body if that feels good for you.

Tarot Meditation: The Fool
The Fool embodies whirling wind blowing between worlds. The Fool is pure existence, without substance or form. This spirit falls into the abyss of mortality. This spirit becomes all that is, seems locked into form. Yet this one being rises freely back to the silence of formlessness. The wandering Fool is like a spinning dust-devil that comes from no visible place, assumes a cloud of matter and then vanishes back into the unknown. All other Tarot cards are images frozen in time of the whirling Fool that is beyond time. When the Fool rules the world, he is the Emperor. When the Fool sits alone in thought, she is the High Priestess. When the Fool is terror and explosion, — that is the Tower. All are bound in the oneness of the Fool. The Fool is bound by no-thing.
In your preferred meditation posture, allow your eyes to close gently. Place your hands in your lap in line with your abdomen.
Breathing freely and easily. Just allowing the breath to come and go as it will.
And remaining with your eyes gently closed, visualize yourself following a path. Look down as you imagine yourself walking along it … what sort of path is it? Feel the texture of what is under your feet on this path. It could be a smooth or a rough path, or the sort of path that you have always loved that is leading you to your special place of beauty, harmony and peace. Continue walking along this path and see before you now your peaceful sanctuary. Enter into this place, for it could be a warm cozy room … it could be some special place in nature that you love, like the beach, the forest, a lake or some other place. This is the place that you can always come to where you can relax where you can experience peace and calm, a place where you are always safe and protected.
As you wander about in your own special haven, look about you and acquaint yourself with your surroundings. Touch the things that await you here and that you love. Smell the scents and aromas in this special place. And, listen to the sounds that are unique to your wonderous place.
See before you a special seat that you can sink into and feel cozy and relaxed. This can be any kind of seat in which you can sit in comfort and safety. Go now to your special seat and make yourself comfortable there.
Counting backwards into an even deeper state of relaxation … knowing that you are in control at all times … hearing these words and letting them drift by …
TEN … going deeper … NINE, EIGHT … deeper and deeper … SEVEN, SIX … relaxing and deepening … FIVE, FOUR … very very deep … THREE, TWO … relaxing, deepening … relaxing, deepening … and ONE … feeling so relaxed, so very very relaxed in your peaceful sanctuary.
And just being aware of the breath … the inward breath and the outward breath … hearing these words and allowing them to fade away.
Now, visualize yourself just like The Fool in the tarot. The Fool is not a derogatory name in this sense, but a term used to describe someone beginning the journey of deeper understanding (Chokmah) and self-knowledge (Binah) on the path of the flaming sword. Even though we are adults and may have already journeyed far, parts of us still remain naïve, unworldly or undeveloped. Immerse yourself now in the imagery of The Fool, entering into this archtype, whether you are female or male.
Visualize yourself as The Fool beginning a journey. It could be a physical journey or spiritual journey. It could be a journey, as in going to another country, or even changing your residence. It could be a journey into a new career. It could be a personal journey into changing habits so that you can experience greater health and abundance. It could be the journey of a new relationship, or a change in a relationship you already have. It could be a journey of that you may have wanted to do for some time, but something may be holding you back. Reflect now for a few moments on the journey you want to make, or would like to make, and hold that image in your mind.
Now, allow that image to fade. And, being in the archetype of The Fool, imagine this as a time in your life when you may be contemplating taking a risk … stepping off the cliff, so to speak, and plunging into something new. You may be at a crossroads in your life. If this is happening to you, reflect on that now. Stay very focused on what is happening to you right now.
And, letting those images fade again … and like the archetype of The Fool, you may be going on a personal quest. There is an element of impossibly setting off into the unknown. Again, like The Fool, your Inner Child may be innocent and eager, uninformed and uncorrupted, blind to any perils that lie ahead. Or, the inner critical adult may be remonstrating with you for such an absurd notion of wanting change in your life.
Allow yourself to sink into any feelings that may be arising for you now, and be aware of where those feelings are in your body. They could be feelings of fear and anxiety with impending change, or feelings of enthusiasm, excitement and joy as you visualize yourself setting off on this new journey. Whatever the feelings, just allow them to be there … be aware of them, observe them … without judgment.
Be aware of the breath again … the inward breath and the outward breath. Be aware of the breath as it enters and leaves your body … stabilizing your body, centering your body.
And now keep on feeling deeply into The Fool, for he or she is quite unconcerned.
Recall a time in your life when you felt very confident, as though you didn’t have a care in the world … that you carried very little with you, unburdened by worldly possessions. Go there now. If you cannot recall such a time, imagine how it would be like to have great confidence in yourself and not a care in the world.
Bring this memory from the past alive again with sounds you could hear then … what you could touch then … feel, smell, taste then … use all your senses to experience that time. Make it as vivid as you can. Make it as alive as you can. Be fully engaged in that moment in time and hold the good feelings that you had then in your body now.
And deepening more and more into the archetype of The Fool, anchoring those good feelings in your body, imagine that you are about to step off of the cliff, to plunge into the unknown, feeling unperturbed … the eternal optimist … ready to leap into anything because you are spontaneous and carefree … but most of all because you can trust and affirm for yourself your trust in yourself.
You may want to repeat to yourself, “I trust in myself. I trust in life. I trust and I let go.”
And, relaxing more and more into the archetype of The Fool, awakening in you a sense of adventure … when was the last time you stepped out of the status quo and had an adventure? Was it back in your youth, or more recently? What sort of adventure could enliven you now and give you greater vitality and heightened sensitivity?
It doesn’t have to be extreme, like climbing a mountain … it could be something such as starting a hobby or doing something you’ve always wanted to do. An adventure is about taking you in a new direction that is exciting and has an unknown element in it.
Visualize an adventure you would love now and bring it alive using all your senses. Seeing this new adventure … touching, tasting, smelling and hearing so many aspects of this adventure. Bringing it alive and fully participating in it now.
Go now to that place within, using the breath to take you there … the inward breath and the outward breath … the breath that deepens your intuition and insight to guide you through change no matter what your adventure may be.
Now, take in a deep breath … breathing in trust and belief in yourself … knowing that if you are called to make changes in your life, you can do so. And, as you breathe out, breathe out and relaxing … and letting go … letting go … letting go.
And take in another deep breath … breathing in faith in yourself … and as you breathe out, let go of all worries and self-doubts you may have. Breathe freely and easily now … allowing each breath to deepen your intuitive knowing and trust in yourself.
It is time now for you to leave your peaceful sanctuary … and so you exit from your safe place … and now, you are back on the path once more. You know you can come here any time you wish to be alone, to be in a place of inner calm.
And, counting from ONE to FIVE … ONE … becoming aware of yourself sitting on a chair or on a cushion on the floor … TWO … gently wiggling your fingers … THREE … slowly moving your head from side to side … FOUR … being aware of your feet and toes, and wiggling them … and FIVE … very very slowly, opening your eyes. Take a deep and clearing breath and stretch your whole body, if this feels good to you.

Truth Is Authenticity: Your Magical Motto
There are situations in daily living that demand your participation in the moment. More often than not, and especially if you are dealing with uncertainties, you are not inclined to deal with a challenge to your pattern of thinking, of reasoning. Actually, a surprising number of individuals entertain passionate emotional responses to another’s different opinions or values. The body knows when it experiences energies emanating from another energy source, directly — that is, the body experiences a situation truthfully, authentically.
It is not the person that you want to get into a battle with, rather, it is the person’s behavior. Macrocosmically, you are examining and defining your spirit’s behavior. Microcosmically, you are examining and defining your magical self, and the methodology of your examination, if you will, is your magical motto.
Your magical motto is the energetic seed at the center of your Kether-In-Malkuth. Every time you utilize your motto in magical work, you unlock behaviors that become keys that open further doors on your magical journey. Your magical motto is your tool of personal (Netzach) reflection (Hod). See and perceive your Self and others through your personal reflection embodied in your motto to properly discern another’s behavior from spiritual nature.
If we truly see ourselves as spiritual beings having a human experience, then wouldn’t it make sense to give to the body that which is physical, and acknowledge to the spirit that which is eternal?
And lastly, you maintain control over your magical motto by maintaining its secrecy because it is your spiritual name and the key to your magical Self. You do not give away your personal power, embodied in your name, to other people outside our Order because “it is by names and images that all powers are awakened and reawakened in your sphere of sensation.” If you want to be successful on your spiritual path, flow like the natural Tao of life and let be, let live and let move.
Learn to effectively detach from the mundane by using your magical motto and practice the art of separating the pure ideals of spirit from the temporal rational ways of the flesh. Empower your motto. The magical motto is not just a phrase to be meditated upon, but is a powerful symbolism of one’s personal microcosm that can, over time, induce an altered state of consciousness, more spiritually centered and upraised — more connected with one’s Higher Genius (of which the motto is a gift!). Try imagining the ball’s golden light permeating your entire body … and, as that sphere elevates upward, it is transforming them into golden bodies. And so … as it passes your feet, your feet are left glowing golden light. Once it reaches your head, your entire body is made of golden light. While doing the Four-Fold Breath feel as if you have become more than human — you become the identity or consciousness of your Magical Self (referred to by your Magical Motto). I suspect this also helps tap into and strengthen the current of our Order, being that it is the names we all traditionally are to know each other by.
On Words and Silence of the Mind: the Relaxation Ritual
I’d like to stir some attention to the Relaxation Meditation, which is recommended to be performed preceding any ritual work. I think that with consistent practice of this meditation, it eventually evolves into a lot more than just relaxing the body and quieting the mind. It could become a blessing in its own right, and even an invocation.
Consider the warming Golden Dawn sun that starts at your feet — the center of Malkuth. This meditation in a way begins as an invocation of the Light of Tiphareth unto the Neophyte in Malkuth, or Assiah. Letting the Sun bathe your entire being as it moves up your Middle Pillar is a blessing from the Higher Genius unto the Lower Self — an empowerment of the work about to be performed.
I speak of a calm mind but that is actually contradictory. When you are truly calm, not just keeping quiet, the mind does not exist. It merges into its Source — Consciousness. This depth of calm I call great silence. I cannot speak of silent mind — silent mind is no mind … like that feeling I felt in Saturn.
Words … words … origin of thought … silence … center … the voice of the silence … life-giving or death-dealing vibrations that form into words. How can I continue? How can I maintain a calm mind? I feel like a pitcher on the mound, winding up for the pitch … I’ve got butterflies in my tummy. Breathe.
For example, if I am not speaking, there is no speech. It cannot be called quiet speech. We use this language in normal speech, like saying peace of mind. Ultimate silence, or transcendence, is nothing else than the mind merging into its Source.
An example is waves.
When waves subside, they merge into the ocean. They are not kept aside somewhere. In the same way, I cannot get away from my mind. I have to solve it, purify it and let it subside. It simply means getting to the Source of my mind: the reality, or truth, beyond it … beyond its horizon.
I cannot transcend my mind unless it is purified. An impure mind holds me back. Even if my mind is positive, I am impure because I am too much of one thing over its opposite.
But, so what? The mind should not be allowed to be a block to my Higher Genius, or a part of me to be shunned.
My mind, my intellect, my thinking self … is a child that has to be pacified and quieted, not by forceful control or threat of pressure, but by the sweet will of merging. Again, with the unity felt when I let go and allow my body to fall into a state of total relaxation.
This Relaxation Ritual is an effective way to prepare to meet your Higher Genius in transcendence.
3=8 Study: The Timeless Kabiri
The Timeless Kabiri (1)
FROM the very day when the first mystic found the means of communication between this world and the worlds of the invisible host, between the sphere of matter and that of pure spirit, he concluded that to abandon this mysterious science to the profanation of the rabble was to lose it.
The Kabiri or the Kabirim [the name is Phoenician] were Deities and very mysterious gods with the ancient nations, including the Israelites, and were held in the highest veneration at Thebes, in Lemnos, Phrygia, Macedonia, and especially at Samothrace. They were mystery gods, no profane having the right to name or speak of them. Herodotus makes of them Fire-gods and points to Vulcan as their father. The Kabiri presided over the Mysteries, and their real number has never been revealed, their occult meaning being very sacred.
The Kabiri were also Assyrian gods. In Hebrew the name means “the mighty ones,” Gibborim. In Samothrace, an island famous and renowned for its Mysteries all over the world — perhaps the oldest ever established in our present race — they were the Samothraces. The latter are considered identical with the Kabiri, Dioscuri and Corybantes. The names of the Samothraces were mystical, denoting Pluto, Ceres or Proserpine, Bacchus and Æsculapius, or Hermes. At one time all the deities connected with fire, whether they were divine, infernal or volcanic, were called Kabirian. With the Christians, however, they are now devils, although the modern Archangels are the direct transformation of these same Kabiri.
Those who know anything of the Samothracian mysteries will remember that the generic name of the Kabiri was the “Holy Fires,” which created on seven localities of the island of Electria (or Samothrace) the “Kabir born of the Holy Lemnos” (the island sacred to Vulcan). According to Pindar, this Kabir, whose name was Adamas, was, in the traditions of Lemnos, the type of the primitive man born from the bosom of the Earth. He was the archetype of the first males in the order of generation, and was one of the seven autochthonous ancestors or progenitors of mankind.
A Mystery, imparted to but very few initiates, was enacted once every seven years during the Mysteries, and the records of it are found self-imprinted on the leaves of the Thibetan sacred tree, the mysterious Kounboum, in the Lamasery of the holy adepts. In the shoreless ocean of space radiates the central, spiritual, and invisible sun. The universe is his body, spirit, and soul; and after this ideal model are framed all “things.” These three emanations are the three lives, the three degrees of the gnostic Pleroma, the three “Kabalistic Faces,” for theANCIENT of the ancient, the holy of the aged, the great En-Soph, “has a form and then he has no form.” The invisible “assumed a form when he called the universe into existence,” says the Sohar, the Book of Splendor. The first light is His Soul, the Infinite, Boundless, and Immortal breath; under the efflux of which the universe heaves its mighty bosom, infusing intelligent life throughout creation. The second emanation condenses cometary matter and produces form within the cosmic circle; sets the countless worlds floating in the electric space, and infuses the unintelligent, blind life-principle into every form. The third produces the whole universe of physical matter; and as it keeps gradually receding from the Central Divine Light its brightness wanes and it becomes DARKNESS and the BAD — pure matter, the “gross purgations of the celestial fire” of the Hermetists.
When the Central Invisible, the “highest and greatest Creative POWER,” saw the efforts of the divine Scintilla[Over-Soul], unwilling to be dragged lower down into the degradation of matter, to liberate itself, he permitted it to shoot out from itself a monad, over which, attached to it as by the finest thread, the Divine Scintilla had to watch during its ceaseless peregrinations from one form to another. Thus the monad was shot down into the first form of matter and became encased in a stone; then, in course of time, through the combined efforts ofliving fire and living water, both of which shone their reflection upon the stone, the monad crept out of its prison to sunlight as a lichen. From change to change it went higher and higher; the monad, with every new transformation borrowing more of the radiance of its parent, Scintilla (Soul), which approached it nearer at every transmigration. For “the First Cause had willed it to proceed in this order”; and destined it to creep on higher until the physical form became once more the Adam of dust, shaped in the image of the Adam Kadmon (Pitris).
Before undergoing its last earthly transformation, the external covering of the monad, from the moment of its conception as an embryo, passes in turn, once more, through the phases of the several kingdoms. In its fluidic prison it assumes a vague resemblance at various periods of the gestation to plant, reptile, bird, and animal, until it becomes a human embryo. At the birth of the future man, the monad, radiating with all the glory of its immortal parent [Dhyani-Buddha] which watches it from the seventh sphere, becomes senseless. It loses all recollection of the past, and returns to consciousness but gradually, when the instinct of childhood gives way to reason and intelligence. After the separation between the life-principle (astral spirit) and the body takes place, the liberated soul — Monad, exultingly rejoins the mother and father spirit [i.e., the Fire-Kabiri], the radiant Augoeides, and the two, merged into one, forever form, with a glory proportioned to the spiritual purity of the past earth-life, the Adam who has completed the circle of necessity, and is freed from the last vestige of his physical encasement. Henceforth, growing more and more radiant at each step of his upward progress, he mounts the shining path that ends at the point from which he started around the Grand Cycle.
If one studies comparative Theogony, it is easy to find that the secret of these “Fires” was taught in the Mysteries of every ancient people, pre-eminently in Samothrace. There is not the smallest doubt that the Kabiri, the most arcane of all the ancient deities, gods and men, great deities and Titans, are identical with the Kumaras and Rudras headed by Kartikeya [Mars, personifying the powers of the LOGOS] — a Kumara also. This is quite evident even exoterically; and these Hindu deities were, like the Kabiri, the personified sacred Fires of the most occult powers of Nature. The several branches of the Aryan Race, the Asiatic and the European, the Hindu and the Greek, did their best to conceal their true nature, if not their importance. As in the case of the Kumaras, the number of the Kabiri is uncertain. Some say that they were three or four only; others say seven. Thus, while in Samothrace and the oldest Egyptian temples they were the great Cosmic Gods (the seven and the forty-nineSacred Fires), in the Grecian fanes their rites became mostly phallic, therefore to the profane, obscene. In the latter case they were three and four, or seven — the male and female principles — (the crux ansata), this division showing why some classical writers held that they were only 3, while others named 4. And these were, the Kabiri Axieros (in his female aspect, Demeter); Axio-Kersa (Persephone); Axiokersos (Pluto or Hades); and Kadmos or Kadmilos (Hermes — not the ithyphallic Hermes mentioned by Herodotus … but “he of the sacred legend,” explained only during the Samothracian mysteries). They may very well stand for the alter-egos of the four Kumaras, Sanat-Kumara, Sananda, Sanaka, and Sanatana. The former deities, whose reputed father was Vulcan, were often confounded with the Dioscuri, Corybantes, Anaces, etc., just as the Kumara, whose reputed father is Brahmâ (or rather, the “Flame of his Wrath”) … were confounded with the Asuras, the Rudras, and the Pitris, for the simple reason that they are all one — i.e., correlative Forces and Fires.
The Kabirim, the “mighty ones,” are identical with our primeval Dhyan-Chohans, with the incorporeal and corporeal Pitris, and with all the rulers and instructors of the primeval races, which are referred to as the Gods and Kings of the divine Dynasties. It matters little whether it is Isis, or Ceres — the “Kabiria” — or again the Kabiri. Every nation has either the seven and ten Rishi-Manus and Prajapatis; the seven and ten Ki-y; or ten and seven Amshaspends (six exoterically, if Ormazd, their chief and Logos, is excluded); ten and seven Chaldean Anedots, ten and seven Sephiroth, etc., etc. One and all have been derived from the primitive Dhyan-Chohans of the Esoteric doctrine, or the “Builders” of the Stanzas. From Manu, Thot-Hermes, Oannes Dagon, and Edris-Enoch, down to Plato and Panadores, all tell us of seven divine Dynasties, of seven Lemurian and seven Atlantean divisions of the earth; of the seven primitive and dual gods who descend from their celestial abode and reign on Earth, teaching mankind Astronomy, Architecture, and all the other sciences that have come down to us.
These Beings appear first as “gods” and Creators; then they merge in nascent man, to finally emerge as “divine-Kings and Rulers.” But this fact has been gradually forgotten. As Bosuage shows, the Egyptians themselves confessed that science flourished in their country only since Isis-Osiris, whom they continue to adore as gods, “though they had become Princes in human form.” And he adds of Osiris-Isis (the divine androgyne): “It is said that this Prince (Isis-Osiris) built cities in Egypt, stopped the overflowing of the Nile; invented agriculture, the use of the vine, music, astronomy, and geometry.”
It is the Kabiri who are credited with having revealed, by producing corn or wheat, the great boon of agriculture. What Isis-Osiris, the once living Kabiria, has done in Egypt, that Ceres is said to have done in Sicily; they all belong to one class. To them, the Kabiri or Titans, is ascribed the invention of letters (theDevanagari, or the alphabet and language of the gods), of laws and legislature, of architecture, as of the various modes of magic, so-called; and of the medical use of plants. Hermes, Orpheus, Cadmus, Asclepius, all those demi-gods and heroes, to whom is ascribed the revelation of sciences to men, and in whom Bryant, Faber, Bishop Cumberland, and so many other Christian writers, too zealous for the plain truth, would force posterity to see only pagan copies of one and sole prototype, named Noah — are all generic names.
As to the Jewish Noah, no Occultist would ever think of dispossessing him of his prerogatives, if he is claimed to be an Atlantean; for this would simply show that the Israelites repeated the story of Vaivasvata-Manu, Xisuthrus, and so many others, and that they only changed the name, to do which they had the same right as any other nation or tribe. What we object to is the literal acceptation of Biblical chronology, as it is absurd, and in accord with neither geological data nor reason. Moreover, if Noah was an Atlantean, then he was a Titan, a giant, as Faber shows; and if a giant, then why is he not shown as such in Genesis? The Titans and Kabirs have been invariably made out by the theologians and some pious symbologists as indissolubly connected with the grotesque personage called devil, and every proof to the contrary has been hitherto as invariably rejected and ignored; therefore, the Occultist must neglect nothing which may tend to defeat this conspiracy of slander.
Neither the Chaldean nor the Biblical deluge (the stories of the Babylonian Xisuthrus and Noah) is based on the universal or even on the Atlantean deluges, recorded in the Indian allegory of Vaivasvata-Manu. They are all the exoteric allegories based on the esoteric mysteries of Samothrace. If the older Chaldees knew the esoteric truth of Samothrace in the Puranic legends, the other nations were aware only of the Samothracian mystery, and allegorized it. They adapted it to their astronomical and anthropological, or rather phallic, notions. Samothrace is known historically to have been famous in antiquity for a deluge, which submerged the country and reached the top of the highest mountains; an event which happened before the age of the Argonauts. It was overflowed very suddenly by the waters of the Euxine, regarded up to that time as a lake. If, while coupling with this the fact that Samothrace was colonized by the Phoenicians, and before them by the mysterious Pelasgians who came from the East, one remembers also the identity of the mystery gods of the Phoenicians, Chaldeans, and Israelites, it will be easy to discover whence came also the confused account of the Noachian deluge.
Thus it is very important to prevent fanatics from monopolising all the facts in history and legend, and from fathering their distortions of truth, history, and legend upon one man. Noah, is either a myth along with the others or one whose legend was built upon the Kabirian or Titanic tradition, as taught in Samothrace. He has, therefore, no claim to be monopolised by either Jew or Christian. If, as Faber tried to demonstrate at such cost of learning and research, Noah is an Atlantean, and a Titan, and his family are Kabiri or pious Titans, etc., then biblical chronology falls by its own weight, and along with it all the patriarchs — the antediluvian and pre-Atlantean Titans. As now discovered and proven, Cain is Mars, the god of power and generation. Tubal-Cain is a Kabir, “an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron”; or, if this will please better, he is one with Hephaestos or Vulcan — Vul-cain, the greatest god also with the later Egyptians, and the greatest Kabir. The god of time was Chium in Egypt, or Saturn, or Seth, and Chium is the same as Cain. Jabal is taken from the Kabiri — instructors in agriculture, “such as have cattle,” and Jubal is “the father of those who handle the harp,” he, or they who fabricated the harp for Kronos and the trident for Poseidon.
The history or “fables” about the mysterious Telchines, fables echoing each and all the archaic events of our esoteric teachings, furnish us with a key to the origin of Cain’s genealogy; they give the reason why the Roman Catholic Church identifies “the accursed blood” of Cain and Ham with Sorcery, and makes it responsible for the Deluge. Were not the Telchines, it is argued, the mysterious iron-workers of Rhodes; they who were the first to raise statues to the gods, furnish them with weapons, and men with magic arts? And is it not they who were destroyed by a deluge at the command of Zeus, as the Cainites were by that of Jehovah? The Telchines are simply the Kabiri and the Titans, in another form. They are the Atlanteans also. “Like Lemnos and Samothrace,” says Decharme, “Rhodes, the birthplace of the Telchines, is an island of volcanic formation.” The island of Rhodes emerged suddenly out of the seas, after having been previously engulfed by the Ocean, say the traditions. Like Samothrace it is connected in the memory of men with the Flood legends.
The Kabiri are in truth “the great, beneficent and powerful Gods,” as Cassius Hermone calls them. At Thebes, the Kabirim Kore and Demeter had a sanctuary, and at Memphis, the Kabiri had a temple so sacred that none, excepting the priests, were suffered to enter their holy precincts. During the Samothracian Mysteries, “after the distribution of pure Fire a new life began.” This was the “new birth” that is alluded to by Jesus in his nocturnal conversation with Nicodemus. “Initiated into the most blessed of all the Mysteries, being ourselves pure … we become just and holy with wisdom.” “He breathed on them and saith unto them, ‘Take of Holy Pneuma’.” And this simple act of will-power was sufficient to impart vaticination in its nobler and more perfect form if both the initiator and the initiated were worthy of it. To deride this gift, even in its present aspect, “as the corrupt offspring and lingering remains of an ignorant age of superstition, would be as unphilosophical as it is wrong,” as remarked by a 19th century minister. “To remove the veil which hides our vision from the future, has been attempted in all ages of the world.”
The fact that, astronomically, the Titans-Kabirim were also the generators and regulators of the seasons, and cosmically the great Volcanic Energies, the gods presiding over all the metals and terrestrial works, does not prevent them from being, in their original divine characters, the beneficent Entities who, symbolized in Prometheus, brought light to the world, and endowed humanity with intellect and reason. They are pre-eminently in every theogony, especially in the Hindu, the sacred Divine FIRES, 3, 7, or 49, according as the allegory demands it. They were universally worshipped, and their origin is lost in the night of time. Yet whether propitiated in Phrygia, Phoenicia, the Troad, Thrace, Egypt, Lemnos or Sicily, their cult was always connected with fire; their temples ever built in the most volcanic localities, and in exoteric worship they belonged to Chthonian Divinities. Therefore Christianity has made of them infernal gods. Nor must it be lost sight of that the Kabiri were of both sexes, as also terrestrial, celestial and kosmic. While in their later capacity of the Rulers of sidereal and terrestrial powers, a purely geological phenomenon was symbolized in the persons of those rulers, they were also, in the beginning of times, the rulers of mankind. When incarnated as Kings of the “divine Dynasties,” they gave the first impulse to civilizations, and directed the mind with which they had endued men to the invention and perfection of all the arts and sciences. Thus the Kabiri are said to have appeared as the benefactors of men, and as such they lived for ages in the memory of nations.
They had other names in the “sacred language,” known but to the hierophants and priests; and “it was not lawful to mention them.” We find them pronounced, albeit slightly disfigured, as known in that same sacred language — by the populations of Siam, Thibet, and India. And on the walls of the Cambodian Nagkon-Wat are to be found at this day several repetitions of the Kabirian gods of Samothrace. This may have escaped the notice of archaeologists, but upon stricter inspection they will be found there, as well as the reputed father of the Kabiri — Vulcan, with his bolts and implements, having near him a king with a sceptre in his hand, which is the counterpart of that of Cheronaea, or the “scepter of Agamemnon,” so-called, said to have been presented to him by the lame god of Lemnos. In another place we find Vulcan, recognizable by his hammer and pincers, but under the shape of a monkey, as usually represented by the Egyptians. It is easy to see that the excavators of Ellora, the builders of the old Pagodas, the architects of Copan and of the ruins of Central America, those of Nagkon-Wat, and those of the Egyptian remains were, if not of the same race, at least of the same religion — the one taught in the oldest Mysteries. And if, as sometimes thought, Nagkon-Wat is essentially a Buddhist temple, how comes it to have on its walls basso relievos of completely an Assyrian character and Kabirian gods which, though universally worshipped as the most ancient of the Asiatic mystery-gods, had already been abandoned 200 years B.C., and the Samothracian mysteries themselves completely altered?
