It’s pretty weird out there right now, folks. For one thing, I’m in Portland Oregon and it’s snowing. In mid-March. Politics? Don’t get me started. Oh, and then there’s the fact that every grocery store in town is out of just about everything because people are preparing to be “self-isolating” at home for a good long while. Of course, it’s not that we shouldn’t be taking this pandemic seriously. We should. And we are.

But all the crazy out there can make us feel a little, well, crazy. Which is not very conducive to experiencing our connection with Isis. It might even make us panic. Is She still there? Was She ever there? Am I “losing my faith”? What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with Her?

Hermeticism is a philosophical tradition that gets its name from Hermes Trismegistus, a word which means thrice-greatest Hermes. Whether or not the information stretches all the way back to the time of Atlantis, is disputed, and is mostly commonly attributed to European Renaissance alchemy starting towards the end of the middle ages. After reading “God Making” by Donald Tyson in The Golden Dawn Journal III: The Art of Hermes, edited by Chic & Tabatha Cicero, I realized that creating a godform within a statue was a worthy pursuit. Since that time, I’ve been kicking the idea around of creating a cabinet-style box wherein I can place a god or goddess, and work with him/her. This finally came to fruition over the past few days when I remembered I had a bunch of spare lumber and a dedicated ritual space. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A statue of the god/goddess/angel you wish to work with.
  • A full sheet of 1/4″ plywood (though a 2′ x 4′ piece would probably work as well).
  • A good saw (electric handsaw or preferably a table saw).
  • Medium and fine-grade sandpaper.
  • White primer paint.
  • Black (or whatever color you desire) paint OR Chalkboard paint.

We begin our story with Guliano della Rovere. As Pope Julius II, he was head of the Roman Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 1503 to his death in 1513. He also was an ardent follower of astrology. His personal astrologer, Antonio Campanazzo, postponed Julius’ coronation to make sure that the event would fall on an auspicious date. During his time in office, Julius ordered the demolition of the sacred early Christian basilica, built over the tomb of St Peter. It was to be replaced with the new Saint Peter’s Basilica, which was to become a world famous landmark. Again, Julius’ astrologers were called in to elect the most auspicious moment for the laying of the foundation stone. The date the astrologers elected was 18 April 1506.

Perfumes for Isis

At this present moment, our home is filled with flowers. Yes, I know. It’s February. That’s why it’s filled with flowers. And since oriental lilies are some of our favorites, right now, I’m smelling the sweet-dark scent of those wonderful lilies throughout the living room.

And all this leads me to think of the perfumes of ancient Egypt and, of course, the perfumes of Isis particularly. For the Goddesses and Gods of Egypt were always associated with scent. Beautiful scents have always been connected with the Divine, but in Egypt particularly, you knew that a Deity had arrived when you smelled Her or His perfume in the temple air.

1,600 Occult Books Now Digitized & Put Online, Thanks to the Ritman Library and Da Vinci Code Author Dan Brown

Back in December we brought you some exciting news. Thanks to a generous donation from Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown, Amsterdam’s Ritman Library—a sizable collection of pre-1900 books on alchemy, astrology, magic, and other occult subjects—has been digitizing thousands of its rare texts under a digital education project cheekily called “Hermetically Open.” We are now pleased to report, less than two months later, that the first 1,617 books from the Ritman project have come available in their online reading room. The site is still in beta, so to speak; in their Facebook announcement, the Ritman admits they are “still improving the whole presentation,” which is a bit clunky at the moment. But for fans and students of this literature, a little inconvenience is a small price to pay for full access to hundreds of rare occult texts.  […]

ERIS was the Goddess or personified spirit or daimona of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. She was often portrayed, haunting the battlefield and delighting in human bloodshed.

This is MAJOR Cardinal Square discordant energy. We’ve been feeling this off-key disharmony and seeing it in the world of late.  PLUTO in an exact square with VENUS and ERIS is causing the stock market sell-off around the coronavirus which is very real.

I believe this is another tipping point and the market will continue to slide. Tempers will be flaring with Eris and Venus in fiery impatient, angry Aries. “PLUTO is Lord of DEATH and wealth.

I do not often rant on this blog, as those of you who have been reading along well know. But you are about to read one. Okay, a tiny one. Sorry. Every now and then, this little rant gets kicked off by reading other writers…people who actually DO have a relationship with their Deities and who yet often do not use the present tense when speaking or writing about their Deities. Okay, so now you see where this is going.

If you’ve read Isis Magic or Offering to Isis, you may have noticed that—except when something actually is in the past—I always refer to the Goddess in present tense. In fact, I have been very, very, very, very conscious of doing so.

Because, you see, She IS.

She’s is not a Being Who was but is no more. She is not “just a myth,” some silly old…
