Alchemy – HERMETIC PRINCIPLE I. THE PRINCIPLE OF MENTALISM

tumblr_na57a2yf9x1sypuuko1_500

“THE ALL is MIND; The Universe is Mental.”This Principle embodies the truth that “All is Mind.”It explains that THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of “The Material Universe”; the “Phenomena of Life”; “Matter”; “Energy”; and, in short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT…

Squaring The Circle

SQUARING-CIRCLE

“Squaring the circle was a problem that greatly exercised medieval minds. It is a symbol of the opus alchymicum, since it breaks down the original chaotic unity into the four elements and then combines them again in a higher unity. Unity is represented by a circle and the four elements by a square.

The production of one from four is the result of a process of distillation and sublimation which takes the so-called “circular” form: the distillate is subjected to sundry distillations so that the “soul” or “spirit” shall be extracted in its purest state.

The product is generally called the “quintessence,” though this is by no means the only name for the ever-hoped-for and never-to-be-discovered “One.” It has, as the alchemists say, a “thousand names,” like the prima materia.”

— Carl Jung

Quintessence is also known as Aether/Holy Spirit.

From The Zohar – Rule Four—Everything Depends On The Desire

MERKABA

We know what tremendous efforts babies are required to make to take their first steps in life, how diligently they exert for it, never giving up, trying time and time again until they succeed. We, too, must persist with the study of The Zohar patiently and diligently until we begin to “walk” on our own two feet and discover the spiritual world. The system required for our progress has been prepared in advance, and all that is required is that we provide the great desire to attain it.

From The Zohar – Rule Three—The Light In It Reforms: Seek The Light

LIGHT1

We often hear about The Zohar having a special quality, known as Segula. Segula is the natural law of development operating within all of life’s forces. It is not a mystical, imaginary power.

Kabbalists explain that our material world is dominated entirely by the egoistic desire to exploit others, while the spiritual world is dominated by the intention to give and to love. Therefore, we have been given a special means by which to tie those two opposite worlds together, that is, to make our own qualities similar to the quality of love and giving that governs the spiritual world. That special means is called “the light that reforms.”

The light affects us during the reading in a manner we cannot currently perceive, and this is why we call it Segula(Remedy), or “miracle.” But for Kabbalists, who already perceive the spiritual world, there are no miracles at all here, but a completely natural process. All that we must do, they stress, is read The Book of Zohar and wish for the power within it to affect us during the study. Gradually, we will begin to feel a change developing within us. This will be the reforming effect of the light. Then the spiritual world will open and what seemed to us as a Segula, a miracle, will become a clear and vivid natural law.

From The Zohar – Rule Two—Man Is A Small World: Interpreting The Words Correctly

Caduceus

The Book of Zohar contains many descriptions and terms that we know from our world, such as sea, mountains, trees, flowers, animals, people, and road trips. Keep in mind that all the details, characters, and events mentioned in the book do not speak of the world around us, but only of what unfolds within us. Therefore, while reading The Zohar, we should interpret the words within it as expressions of what happens within us, in our souls. We should see the text as a bridge that leads to our deepest qualities and desires.

From The Zohar — Rule One—The Heart Understands: Do Not Study With Your Intellect

TOL1

The Book of Zohar should be studied with the heart, by feeling and wanting. Unlike ordinary forms of study, which rely on processing information and analyses of data, with The Zohar, the approach is fundamentally different. The study of The Zohar is intended to invoke internal transformations, to qualify us to perceiving the hidden reality.

The student’s success depends solely on the extent of our desire to discover and feel that reality. For this reason, there is no need for any prior knowledge, skills, or special talents for the study of The Zohar. All that is required is to have a genuine desire to open one’s eyes and heart to a broad new world.

The Big Bang and the Tree of Life

treeoflife

The diagrams below represent the Tree of Life  (see tree of life video) or 10 sephiroth from the Kabballa which express the quantum singularity event known as the Big Bang. The illustrations of the before the fall of Eden and after the fall of Eden represent the Big Bang expansion of a Photon. The photon is expressed as ML2/T and is the cosmic goose egg which gave birth to the particle/wave type universe that we exist in. The 2 pillars of the tree of life are reflected as the force fields and the matter fields and their parallels are the pillar of mercy and the pillar of judgement.

This is also expressed as a temple which has the 2 pillars of Solomons temple called Jachin andBoaz which relate to biblical texts. They are also aspects of plasma and aether which are also reflected in the big bang as a hot gas controlled by invisible forces. Within the numerics of the 10 in comparison to the universe we see that the 1‘s and 0‘s (10) are used to create the universe and our base 10 mathematics. This 10 is also related to the 10 commandments, the 10 dimensions, our 10major organs, the 10 celestial objects of our solar system, our 10 fingers and 10 toes, our 10 body systems and our 10 month birth cycle (40 weeks).

The rapid expansion of the photon splits the wave and particle aspect of the photon in 2 which creates the 4 fundamental forces of our universe and the protons that go along with it. The 4 fixed points of the zodiac represent these 4 forces which are Gravity, Electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the electroweak forces. They can be compared to DNA and the coding we have as G,A,C and T in our bodies which are a direct reflection of the universe and the cosmic consciousness of God.  The serpents of the illustration match the filaments within the cosmic web which extend out towards the cosmic light horizon of the expanded photon. Biblically a photon orlight bearer could be related to the light of knowledge and that of good and evil. It is also the apple of the eye which enters through our lenses that helps us to see objects and to see knowledge with our 3rd eye or brain.

The 7 level multivers is also contained within these 10 sephiroth which add weight to the God body which has an infinite number of universes contained within each 7 level multiverse. These can also be related to the 7 zodiac symbols present in the image that could also be related to the 7 stars of this multiverse as well. The dragon of the illlustration starts with 7 heads and 10 horns in the before the fall of eden towards a dragon with 8 heads and 11 horns which could represent the infinity andDNA characteristics in it’s design and the 11th dimension could be that of time.

The Egyptian Mysteris: The Legend of Horus and Set – by V.H. Frater D.M.A

HORUS-SET
After the slaying of Osiris by his brother, the evil god Set, Isis enlisted the help of Nephthys and Anubis to reconstitute the body of Osiris. All of the scattered pieces of Osiris were found save his penis, which Isis then fashioned out of pure Gold. Once the body of Osiris was completely reassembled, Isis layed down with Osiris with the purpose of producing a son to avenge the death of her brother and husband Osiris.

Isis then went to Ra and intoxicated him with the wine of the Gods to receive from him his secret name, Horus, so that she may give this name to her son. In giving the child the secret name of Ra he would have the power of the Visible sun, and the Blood of the Hidden and Secret sun. This lineage of both night and day would ensure that he would be victorious and any battle against darkness that he would come across.

Set, hearing of this child, became furious and swore to kill any newborn male he came across. Isis bore Horus in secret promptly hid him away in a lotus flower. She told him to keep silent and think of nothing but her voice, and she would return when the time was right for him to emerge from the lotus. Isis was afraid that Set would find Horus prematurely and kill him, but Horus knew nothing of fear, Horus knew only the voice of his mother, Isis.

The time came, when the rest of the Gods came forth and demanded that a new king take the throne of the Slain Osiris. Isis proclaimed that Horus was the rightful heir to the thrown, but Set demanded that Horus was too young to hold the throne and that he should reign as the brother of Osiris. Isis went and got Horus out of the lotus flower and brought him before the rest of the Gods. There was much debate among the Gods. Thoth agreed that Horus should reign on the throne, but Ra sided with Set. Neith, the Mother, was consulted and she said that Horus would reign on the throne, but that she would double that everything Set owned as payment for his loss of the throne. Set would have no part of this arrangement. Set demanded that the he and Horus battle for the throne, being confident in himself that he could kill the child Horus. Ra continued to side with Set, while the rest of the Gods agreed with Neith in her judgment.

Set took off after Horus and demanded a contest for the throne. A series of contests were held including turning themselves into hippopotami and seeing who could hold their breath the longest and other such trivial challenges. During one challenge, Set plucked out the left eye of Horus. Thoth restored Horus’s eye and told him that this was the Light of the Moon. In another challenge Set sent a darkness over the right eye of Horus. Hathor poured some of her milk into Horus’s right eye and said this is the Light of the Sun.

Again, the other Gods declared that Horus would be the king. Set demanded one more contest, however. Set invited Horus outside to battle. After a short time Horus came back into where the rest of the Gods were with Set dragging behind bound in chains. Horus bound Set to a spike before the Gods and slew him. Set was defeated. Osiris was Avenged.

More Alchemy …

LaDesesperacion800-770x411

“The philosophy of alchemy is concerned with the mystery of materia prima, or the first matter of life. This first matter is the ‘Chaos’ of the Orphics–space itself–within which takes place the mystery of creation. Space is the infinite potential, and its social equivalent is the human collective… Human society is then the base metal to be transmuted.

The great Masters of alchemy declared that the seeds of gold are present in all natural substances. Augmentation is the releasing of the universal energy in these seeds–not the creation of gold, but the growth of this precious metal.

Growth is hastened by art. The tree of the philosophers bearing its twelve kinds of fruit, is the ‘soul tree’ of Jakob Boehme. This German mystic wrote that the seed of God is planted in the human heart. Nourished by holy aspiration, prayer, meditation, and the contemplation of the mysteries of the spirit, this seed grows miraculously, and its fruit feeds those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.”

“The Kabbalistic doctrine was long the religion of the Sage and the Savant; because, like Freemasonry, it incessantly tends toward spiritual perfection, and the fusion of the creeds and Nationalities of Mankind. In the eyes of the Kabbalist, all men are his brothers; and their relative ignorance is, to him, but a reason for instructing them.

There were illustrious Kabbalists among the Egyptians and Greeks, whose doctrines the Orthodox Church has accepted; and among the Arabs were many, whose wisdom was not slighted by the Medieval Church.”

A common view espoused today is that a Rosicrucian may not claim to be a Rosicrucian, that doing so essentially shows that he or she is not actually a member of that Fraternity.
Peregrin Wildoak raised this topic in his recent blog post with a number of sources for this rule, and though the sources may appear initially compelling, there are a number of issues which make me question just how authentic this prohibition really is, and how valid it is in the context of the Golden Dawn.

From The Zohar …

ZOHAR-2May they begin to teach the holy Book of Zohar to children when they are still small, ages nine or ten, as it was written by the great Kabbalist… and redemption would certainly come soon, without any labor pains of the Messiah. And Rabbi Shem Tov had already written in The Book of Faiths that Judah and Israel will be redeemed forever only by the wisdom of Kabbalah, since only this is a Godly wisdom, given to the sages of Israel since days and years of old. And by its merit will the glory of God and the glory of His Sacred Law be revealed.

Never ridicule or cast criticism upon the form of religion professed by another, for what right have we to desecrate what is sacred in another’s eyes?

Study well that Great Arcanum, the proper equilibrium of mercy and severity, for either unbalanced is not good. Unbalanced severity is cruelty and oppression; unbalanced mercy is but weakness, and would permit evil to exist unchecked, thus making itself as it were the accomplice of evil.

Alchemy – Of Our Mercury which is the Green Lion Devouring the Sun …

There’s a famous alchemical work called the Rosary of the Philosopher’s, or Rosarium Philosophorum, which features 20 woodcut illustrations. They are very famous, having been printed and reprinted a number of times.

An English translation of the version printed in 1550 can be found here:
http://www.levity.com/alchemy/rosary1.html

It contains a number of quotes, real and otherwise, from earlier alchemists such as Geber, (pseudo-) Arnald of Villanova, Senior etc.

One of the illustrations is of a green lion eating the sun, which could be taken as meaning it is a substance which absorbs gold, indeed the translation says as much …

green-lion-eating-the-sun

“I am the true green and Golden Lion without cares,
In me all the secrets of the Philosophers are hidden.”

Now, this text is often taken as being one about spiritual alchemy. The problem with that is that that general approach (espeically with regards to claims by Jung and other esotericists) has been discredited as regarding the actual position of alchemy in Europe in the16th century and earlier.

Which leaves us with an interesting question – how can the green lion eat gold?

And one obvious assumption – that the text maps onto physical operations. I should point out straight away that a lot of medieval alchemy is simply the author re-writing previous authors, changing the emphasis of the words and concepts used and inventing or bringing to prominence different names which may or may not cover the same substance or concept. Which makes finding the way through the texts rather difficult.

In some medieval alchemical texts, gold is certainly consumed by mercury to form an amalgam on which further work is carried out. So if the green lion is a mercury compound then it can surely consume gold. If it is sulphuric acid, it cannot, but what it could do is react with other metals present and form strange compounds. And if the sun referred to is not specifically gold, but sulphur or suchlike, then you can still get some odd reactions taking place.

So, lets look at some other alchemical mentions of the Green Lion.

The Book of the Composition of Alchemy says at the end, in the exposition of kinds, that “The green lion is glass”, which is probably an error transposing Vitriol into Vitrum. I suspect that this is a later addition than the body of the text, which has probably undergone a lot of changes over the years. The core is an Arabic work, but I don’t know how far back the symbolism of the green lion goes; 9th century recipes attributed to Rhazi include the distillation of green vitriol to produce an acidic water.

By the early 14th century, in the Testamentum of pseudo-Lull, a water from green vitriol is to be joined to a metal. That and other mentions in that century prove that distillation of sulphuric acid was practised; the difficult bit is understanding what part it might have played in the alchemical recipes. There are other recipes from that century which include vitriol, saltpetre and mercury, the practise of which most likely gives some odd mercuric compounds with acids, such as the white mercury sulphide, or if salt is present as suggested by some, mercuric chloride, which is also white. I can’t think of any obvious way in which it could be tainted green, nor do the old chemistry textbooks help.
So that’s another set of experiments that I would like to do.

But by the 15th century in England, the green lion is, according to George Ripley, not actually vitriol, although fools think it is:

XVI. But of the Green Lyon of Fools, this we say, that from it with a strong fire is drawn Aquafortis, in the which, the aforesaid Philosophers’ Lyon of the Mineral Stone, ought to be Elixirated, and assumes its Name. Raymundus saith, it were better, or safer, to eat the Eyes of a Basilisk, than that Gold, which is made with the Fire against Nature.

XVII. And I say also, that the things from whence the same Aquafortis is drawn is green Vitriol and Azoth: i.e., Vitriol Natural, not Artificial, viz. the droppings of Copper, called also Roman Vitriol, Roman Gold, by many of the Philosophers, from the abundance of its noble Tincture, the which Tincture must be fermented with common Gold.

http://www.alchemywebsite.com/ripley_medulla.html

Leaving aside the question of what Ripley’s green lion might be, the problem is that distillation of vitriol produces sulphuric acid, a mineral acid not hitherto known for it’s effect upon gold. To dissolve gold need aqua regia, a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids.
Now some alchemical recipes will produce a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid, and the Compound of Compounds, or at least the late/ post medieval version of it, has a recipe that produces sulphuric and nitric acid mixture and then you add Ammonium Chloride to give Chlorine ions in solution, which will certainly dissolve gold. But as with some other similar recipes, it doesn’t mention the green lion, which suggests that there are two paths, one calling green vitriol the green lion, the other not.

What may help clarify things is the question of the green lion is when this version of the Rosarium was written. There is a Rosarius attributed to Arnald of Villanova, and then there are other texts that are also tited “Rosarius” or similar. However the Arnaldian one is not the same as the 1550 one we are concerned with, according to this review by Michela Pereira:

http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=6666788

I note that mention of the Green lion is made in a section headed “The table of the Greater Science” and one attributed to “Morienus”, and the later section headed “Of our Mercury which is the Green lion devouring the sun”.

The problem is simply finding decent information about the Rosarius and similar texts, given how many there were and how alchemists did not hesitate to steal texts and re-write them. Thorndike’s History of Magic and experimental science, volume 3, page 55, mentions an anonymous Rosary from the 15th century and another that isn’t from the 14th. The list of alleged quotes from alchemists in this 1550 Rosarius is comprehensive, but does not seem to be newer than the early 14th century, but does include the likes of St Thomas Aquinas, who as far as I am aware didn’t really have his name attached to alchemical works until the Aurora Consurgens in the 15th century.

So if the text is really from the first half of the 16th century, that does happen to overlap when the Compound of Compounds was re-written to use acid to dissolve mercuric chloride. Having written that, it seems I’m a bit wrong – reading Principe “The secrets of Alchemy”, it seems that the 1550 version is based on the original later 14th century text, which acceptable enough given that was when the use of vitriol for acid manufacture was commonplace, and it’s use with mercury and the like.

In fact the more I think about it the more I wonder if the importance of the green lion has been overstated, based on the use of green vitriol in manufacturing mercurial compounds. You mix some white stuff, green stuff, and mercury, and get a whitish substance

Of course one can rarely be certain about reproducing alchemical practises from texts and possible recipes, which is irritating. It might be that there is no practical intention in the text at all. But then why the lion of green? After all, lions are important in medieval heraldry and bestiaries, as the king of beasts a lion would be a sensible choice to eat the king of the metals.

Maybe I don’t have the right kind of brain, but I read extracts from bestiaries such as this:

http://bestiary.ca/beasts/beast78.htm

and can’t see why the lion is so useful in alchemical symbolism.

As a conclusion, all I can say is that this requires further study.

The Treasure of Treasures for Alchemists.

By Philippus Theophrastus Bombast, Paracelsus the Great

NATURE begets a mineral in the bowels of the earth. There are two kinds of it, which are found in many districts of Europe. The best which has been offered to me, which also has been found genuine in experimentation, is externally in the figure of the greater world, and is in the eastern part of the sphere of the Sun. The other, in the Southern Star, is now in its first efflorescence. The bowels of the earth thrust this forth through its surface. It is found red in its first coagulation, and in it lie hid all the flowers and colours of the minerals. Much has been written about it by the philosophers, for it is of a cold and moist nature, and agrees with the element of water.

So far as relates to the knowledge of it and experiment with it, all the philosophers before me, though they have aimed at it with their missiles, have gone very wide of the mark. They believed that Mercury and Sulphur were the mother of all metals, never even dreaming of making mention meanwhile of a third; and yet when the water is separated from it by Spagyric Art the truth is plainly revealed, though it was unknown to Galen or to Avicenna. But if, for the sake of our excellent physicians, we had to describe only the name, the composition; the dissolution, and coagulation, as in the beginning of the world Nature proceeds with all growing things, a whole year would scarcely suffice me, and, in order to explain these things, not even the skins of numerous cows would be adequate.

Now, I assert that in this mineral are found three principles, which are Mercury, Sulphur, and the Mineral Water which has served to naturally coagulate it. Spagyric science is able to extract this last from its proper juice when it is not altogether matured, in the middle of the autumn, just like a pear from a tree. The tree potentially contains the pear. If the Celestial Stars and Nature agree , the tree first of all puts forth shoots in the month of March; then it thrusts out buds, and when these open the flower appears, and so on in due order until in autumn the pear grows ripe. So is it with the minerals. These are born, in like manner, in the bowels of the earth. Let the Alchemists who are seeking the Treasure of Treasures carefully note this. I will shew them the way, its beginning, its middle, and its end. In the following treatise I will describe the proper Water, the proper Sulphur, and the proper Balm thereof. By means of these three the resolution and composition are coagulated into one.

CONCERNING THE SULPHUR OF CINNABAR.Take mineral Cinnabar and prepare it in the following manner. Cook it with rain water in a stone vessel for three hours. Then purify it carefully, and dissolve it in Aqua Regis, which is composed of equal parts of vitriol, nitre, and sal ammoniac. Another formula is vitriol, saltpetre, alum, and common salt.

Distil this in an alembic. Pour it on again, and separate carefully the pure from the impure thus. Let it putrefy for a month in horse-dung; then separate the elements in the following manner. If it puts forth its sign1, commence the distillation by means of an alembic with a fire of the first degree. The water and the air will ascend; the fire and the earth will remain at the bottom. Afterwards join them again, and gradually treat with the ashes. So the water and the air will again ascend first, and afterwards the element of fire, which expert artists recognise. The earth will remain in the bottom of the vessel. This collect there. It is what many seek after and few find.

This dead earth in the reverberatory you will prepare according to the rules of Art, and afterwards add fire of the first degree for five days and nights. When these have elapsed you must apply the second degree for the same number of days and nights, and proceed according to Art with the material enclosed. At length you will find a volatile salt, like a thin alkali, containing in itself the Astrum of fire and earth2. Mix this with the two elements that have been preserved, the water and the earth. Again place it on the ashes for eight days and eight nights, and you will find that which has been neglected by many Artists. Separate this according to your experience, and according to the rules of the Spagyric Art, and you will have a white earth, from which its colour has been extracted. Join the element of fire and salt to the alkalised earth. Digest in a pelican to extract the essence. Then a new earth will be deposited, which put aside.

CONCERNING THE RED LION.Afterwards take the lion in the pelican which also is found [at] first, when you see its tincture, that is to say, the element of fire which stands above the water, the air, and the earth. Separate it from its deposit by trituration. Thus you will have the true aurum potabile3. Sweeten this with the alcohol of wine poured over it, and then distil in an alembic until you perceive no acidity to remain in the Aqua Regia.

This Oil of the Sun, enclosed in a retort hermetically sealed, you must place for elevation that it may be exalted and doubled in its degree. Then put the vessel, still closely shut, in a cool place. Thus it will not be dissolved, but coagulated. Place it again for elevation and coagulation, and repeat this three times. Thus will be produced the Tincture of the Sun, perfect in its degree. Keep this in its own place.

CONCERNING THE GREEN LION.Take the vitriol of Venus4, carefully prepared according to the rules of Spagyric Art; and add thereto the elements of water and air which you have reserved. Resolve, and set to putrefy for a month according to instructions. When the putrefaction is finished, you will behold the sign of the elements. Separate, and you will soon see two colours, namely, white and red. The red is above the white. The red tincture of the vitriol is so powerful that it reddens all white bodies, and whitens all red ones, which is wonderful.

Work upon this tincture by means of a retort, and you will perceive a blackness issue forth. Treat it again by means of the retort, repeating the operation until it comes out whitish. Go on, and do not despair of the work. Rectify until you find the true, clear Green Lion, which you will recognise by its great weight. You will see that it is heavy and large. This is the Tincture, transparent gold. You will see marvellous signs of this Green Lion, such as could be bought by no treasures of the Roman Leo. Happy he who has learnt how to find it and use it for a tincture!

This is the true and genuine Balsam5, the Balsam of the Heavenly Stars, suffering no bodies to decay, nor allowing leprosy, gout, or dropsy to take root. It is given in a dose of one grain, if it has been fermented with Sulphur of Gold.

Ah, Charles the German, where is your treasure? Where are your philosophers? Where your doctors? Where are your decocters of woods, who at least purge and relax? Is your heaven reversed? Have your stars wandered out of their course, and are they straying in another orbit, away from the line of limitation, since your eyes are smitten with blindness, as by a carbuncle, and other things making a show of ornament, beauty, and pomp? If your artists only knew that their prince Galen – they call none like him – was sticking in hell, from whence he has sent letters to me, they would make the sign of the cross upon themselves with a fox’s tail. In the same way your Avicenna sits in the vestibule of the infernal portal; and I have disputed with him about his aurum potabile, his Tincture of the Philosophers, his Quintessence, and Philosophers’ Stone, his Mithridatic, his Theriac, and all the rest. O, you hypocrites, who despise the truths taught you by a true physician, who is himself instructed by Nature, and is a son of God himself! Come, then, and listen, impostors who prevail only by the authority of your high positions! After my death, my disciples will burst forth and drag you to the light, and shall expose your dirty drugs, wherewith up to this time you have compassed the death of princes, and the most invincible magnates of the Christian world. Woe for your necks in the day of judgment! I know that the monarchy will be mine. Mine, too, will be the honour and glory. Not that I praise myself: Nature praises me. Of her I am born; her I follow. She knows me, and I know her. The light which is in her I have beheld in her; outside, too, I have proved the same in the figure of the microcosm, and found it in that universe.

But I must proceed with my design in order to satisfy my disciples to the full extent of their wish. I willingly do this for them, if only skilled in the light of Nature and thoroughly practised in astral matters, they finally become adepts in philosophy, which enables them to know the nature of every kind of water.

Take, then, of this liquid of the minerals which I have described, four parts by weight; of the Earth of red Sol two parts; of Sulphur of Sol one part. Put these together into a pelican, congelate, and dissolve them three times. Thus you will have the Tincture of the Alchemists. We have not here described its weight: but this is given in the book on Transmutations6.

So, now, he who has one to a thousand ounces of the Astrum Solis shall also tinge his own body of Sol.

If you have the Astrum of Mercury, in the same manner, you will tinge the whole body of common Mercury. If you have the Astrum of Venus you will, in like manner, tinge the whole body of Venus, and change it into the best metal. These facts have all been proved. The same must also be understood as to the Astra of the other planets, as Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Luna, and the rest. For tinctures are also prepared from these: concerning which we now make no mention in this place, because we have already dwelt at sufficient length upon them in the book on the Nature of Things and in the Archidoxies. So, too, the first entity of metals and terrestrial minerals have been made, sufficiently clear for Alchemists to enable them to get the Alchemists’ Tincture.

This work, the Tincture of the Alchemists, need not be one of nine months; but quickly, and without any delay, you may go on by the Spaygric Art of the Alchemists, and, in the space of forty days, you can fix this alchemical substance, exalt it, putrefy it, ferment it, coagulate it into a stone, and produce the Alchemical Phoenix7. But it should be noted well that the Sulphur of Cinnabar becomes the Flying Eagle, whose wings fly away without wind, and carry the body of the phoenix to the nest of the parent, where it is nourished by the element of fire, and the young ones dig out its eyes: from whence there emerges a whiteness, divided in its sphere, into a sphere and life out of its own heart, by the balsam of its inward parts, according to the property of the cabalists.

HERE ENDS THE TREASURE OF THE ALCHEMISTS.

NOTES1 The Sign is nothing else than the mark left by an operation. The house constructed by the architect is the sign of his handicraft whereby his skill and art are determined. Thus the sign is the achievement itself. – De Colica.

2 The earth also has its Astrum, its course, its order, just as much as the Firmament, but peculiar to the element. So also there is an Astrum in the water, even as in the earth, and in like manner with air and fire. Consequently, the upper Astrum has the Astra of the elements for its medium and operates through them by an irresistible attraction. Through this operation of the superior and inferior Astra, all things are fecundated, and led on to their end. – Explicatio Totius Astronomiae. Without the Astra the elements cannot flourish. … In the Astrum of the earth all the celestial operations thrive. The Astrum itself is hidden, the bodies are manifest. … The motion of the earth is brought about by the Astrum of the earth. … There are four Astra in man (corresponding to those of the four elements), for he is the lesser world. – De Caducis, Par. II.

3 Aurum Potabile, that is, Potable Gold, Oil of Gold, and Quintessence of Gold, are distinguished thus. Aurum Potabile is gold rendered potable by intermixture with other substances, and with liquids. Oil of Gold is an oil extracted from the precious metal without the addition of anything. The Quintessence of Gold is the redness of gold extracted therefrom and separated from the body of the metal. – De Membris Contractis, Tract II., c. 2.

4 If copper be pounded and resolved without a corrosive, you have Vitriol. From this may be prepared the quintessence, oil, and liquor thereof. – De Morbis Tartareis. Cuprine Vitriol is Vitriol cooked with Copper. – De Morbis Vermium, Par. 6. Chalcanthum is present in Venus, and Venus can by separation be reduced into Chalcanthum. – Chirurgia Magna. Pars. III., Lib. IV.

5 There is, indeed, diffused through all things a Balsam created by God, without which putrefaction would immediately supervene. Thus in corpses which are anointed with Balsam we see that corruption is arrested and thus in the physical body we infer that there is a certain natural and congenital Balsam, in the absence of which the living and complete man would not be safe from putrefaction. Nothing removes the Balsam but death. But this kind differs from what is more commonly called Balsam, in that the one is conservative of the living, and the other of the dead. – Chirurgia Magna, Pt. II., Tract II., c 3. The confection of Balsam requires special knowledge of chemistry, and it was first discovered by the Alchemists. – Ibid., Pt. I., Tract II., c. 4.

6 It is difficult to identify the treatise to which reference is made here. It does not seem to be the seventh book concerning The Nature of Things, nor the ensuing tract on Cements. The general question of natural and artificial weight is discussed in theAurora of the Philosophers. No detached work on Transmutations has come down to us.

7 Know that the Phoenix is the soul of the Iliaster (that is, the first chaos of the matter of all things). … It is also the Iliastic soul in man. – Liber Azoth, S. V., Practica Lineae Vitae.
